YAY it's finally working! There is so much crap I had to do to get this done... the final bit was all fighting with Windows who decided not to render the font at all after I deleted the old one from the windows/fonts folder. eventually I restarted the system and it fixed everything, so, YAY!

this was a font generated by yourfonts.com and then tweaked using fontforge. fontforge, too, was a bitch to install

why is it that I often end up fighting with linux-centric things? You know what I mean, searching the internet to find out which DLL's I'm missing, searching more to install them, adjusting folder layout, all sorts of crap. back in my day...
